Manuscript Editing

Wondering if your book makes sense? Stuck rewriting and feeling like you’re getting nowhere?

Writing a book isn’t easy, and it can be easy to be discouraged by the time revision time rolls around. Sometimes we all need a little help making sure our words are sharp.

I’m here to help.

I offer a range of manuscript editing services, including developmental or structural editing. In a developmental edit, I’ll focus on your story’s big picture, character arcs, world-building and much more. It’s best for writers with a completed manuscript, who are seeking some clarity around the flow and effectiveness of the book as a whole.

I also offer line editing, focusing on grammar and sentence structure. This is best for writers who are looking for someone to help ensure their prose is on-point. We’ll look at things like word choice, dialogue and prose effectiveness.

Why me?

I’ve worked across a range of projects. Everything from professional applications, website copy and author manuscripts. I currently contract manuscript editing services to Shawline publishing and am an Associate Member of IPed (Institute of Professional Editors, Victoria).

At Shawline I’ve had the pleasure of working with a range of authors across genres, but specialising in YA, fantasy and science fiction. I’m experienced and committed to ongoing professional development to offer clients my best.

What’s the process?

I currently offer a free 1000-word sample edit on manuscripts. This sample will be selected by me from your full manuscript to give you insight into the value of my services. Try before you buy!

If you choose to go forward with the service this is what the next steps are!

  • I read your document.
  • I will suggest changes to the document using track changes in Word.
  • I will supply you with the edited version and a detailed editing summary report.
  • We can then have a one-on-one discussion regarding any questions you may have!

The one-on-one service I offer is personalised, you have the opportunity to ask questions, and discuss your project with me via email or video chat – whichever you’re most comfortable with!

How much does it cost?

Pricing as of May 2023

Because of the personalised nature of my editing services, my quote can only be finalised once I’ve seen your manuscript.

But, a rough guide is $60 per hour for line editing. This is inclusive of in-line document editing, a detailed editing summary report, a one-on-one thirty-minute meeting and email correspondence. The full cost of your project will be quoted based on an assessment of the level of editing required, and the length of the book.

All clients are required to sign a contract and pay a minimum non-refundable deposit before we begin work. This ensures your booking is held, as editing spots are in demand and my schedule fills out well in advance.

‘I have to say my experience working with Steph on my book Foresight was amazing. I’m not just saying that, she was professional, easy to deal with and challenged me on things that made me a better writer but also gave me a better end result. Loved the experience.
